Ice safari
GREENLAND On the western shores of Greenland, around the big Disko Island, there is a lot of places to go for ice safari. The best place being lllulissat Icefjord. This fjord with calving icebergs is Greenland’s most popular tourist destination.
I love safaris, but would never have thought that a safari in the ice would be as spectacular as it is. Growing up in the cold north I have always been more fascinated by sand than by the ice. But after my trip to Greenland I have really experienced the beauty that can be portrayed by ice. Not much can compare to the colors from the glazed white mountains, as they float peacefully in the clear blue ocean and have the rays of the sun shining through them from above.
At summertime there are a lot of icebergs to study in the area around the Disko island, especially around Illulissat town. Illulissat means iceberg and the city is named after the various pieces of ice that calves from Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the few glaciers through which the Greenland ice cap reaches the sea. The small town with a population of 4,546 it is the third-largest settlement in Greenland, after Nuuk and Sisimiut. It is located approximately 200 km north of the Arctic Circle.
Illulisat became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
