PERU: A visit to the Uros islands on lake Titicaca, is unlike any other tourist visits.
The Uro people make their islands, houses, boats and artifacts with totora reeds. They have done so for centuries. The islands are accessible from the mountain city Puno in the Peruvian Andes mountains.
Here are some pictures from when I visited the hand made islands in Peru, january 2010.
The Uro people have lived on lake Titicaca for centuries. They build their islands with bundles of totora reeds.
Rosa, the main lady on the island Apu Kontiki, and her son are selling traditional embroideries.
The Uro houses, boats and a lot of their artifacts are made out of totora reeds.
Rosas colorful closet.
The Uro people still make beautiful reed boats.
And towers…
And signs…
This is from one of the more commercial Uro islands. They accept visa card payments.
